I saw the remastered version of 2001: A Space Odyssey recently and was struck by how beautifully designed HAL’s displays were. I designed a set of displays, trying to get as close to them as I could.
The type is set in Eurostyle Extended and gives the display console a bold visual presence, a perfect contrast to the ship’s interiors that are largely made up of white surfaces.
This logical, cold and minimalist rendering of information seems to suggest the banality of evil inherent in the malfunctioning computer. Yet these codes are difficult to decode. Not user friendly, but enjoyable graphics.
